Health and Social Services Among International Labor Migrants: A Comparative Perspective by Antonio Ugalde,

Health and Social Services Among International Labor Migrants: A Comparative Perspective by Antonio Ugalde,
Migration from less-developed nations to the United States and Western Europe is steadily increasing, and it is unlikely that this trend will reverse. There are currently over a hundred million immigrants worldwide. And many of these immigrants are in a condition of poverty or near poverty, while many also suffer from poor health. The articles in this collection address the health conditions of international labor migrants and the availability and limitations of human and health services for them. Written by leading social scientists and health professionals from both the United States and the European Union, six of the articles focus on Europe, three on the United States, and two on psychological issues related to immigration. The contributors to this volume, representing a wide variety of disciplines (including medicine, social work, political science, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and biology), are in agreement that the health and human services offered in industrial nations are generally monocultural, and not well suited for migrants from other cultures. One article even arrives at the disquieting conclusion that the mental health services offered to immigrants not only do not respond to their needs, but rather serve to reinforce negative perceptions regarding immigrants from third-world countries. This book represents a timely and urgently needed contribution to the discourse on health services for migrants. It demonstrates that the issues and problems of immigration in the United States and Europe have many commonalities and that much can be learned from examining the experiences, successes, and failures of both. Antonio Ugalde is Professor of Sociology at the University ofTexas at Austin and Adjunct Professor at the School of Public Health, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Foundations in Social Neuroscience by John T. Cacioppo, X
A full understanding of the biology and behavior of humans cannot be complete without the collective contributions of the social sciences, cognitive sciences, and neurosciences. This book collects eighty-two of the foundational articles in the emerging discipline of social neuroscience. The book addresses five main areas of research: multilevel integrative analyses of social behavior, using the tools of neuroscience, cognitive science, and social science to examine specific cases of social interaction; the relationships between social cognition and the brain, using noninvasive brain imaging to document brain function in various social situations; rudimentary biological mechanisms for motivation, emotion, and attitudes, and the shaping of these mechanisms by social factors; the biology of social relationships and interpersonal processes; and social influences on biology and health.

Human biology - Human biology is an academic field of biology which focuses on humans; it is closely related to medicine, primate biology, and a number of other fields.

Hall of Human Biology and Evolution - The Hall of Human Biology and Evolution, originally known under the name "Hall of the Age of Man", is located on the first floor of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It is the only major exhibit in the United States to present an in-depth investigation of the mysteries of human evolution.

Coral biology - In marine science, coral biology is the study of various aspects of coral biology like cellular biology, molecular biology and ecology of coral behaviour. Since coral reefs are one of the most important ecosystems in terms of biodiversity and there is increased destruction of their habitat all over the world due to various human and natural effects, it has become increasingly necessary to understand their effects on corals at the cellular level.

Human Cognome Project - The Human Cognome Project seeks to reverse engineer the human brain, paralleling in many ways the Human Genome Project and its success in deciphering the human genome. The HCP is a multidisciplinary undertaking, relevant to, among others: biology, neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence and philosophy of mind.

While the idea of biological evolution has existed for thousands of years, it only developed a scientific foundation in the oceans. As the theory of evolution that began several billion years old.
